Lessons from Hawaii
By Steven L. Anderson, Ph.D., MBA
R
ecently, I gave speeches at national conferences in California and Hawaii. This was very intimidating for me as I have never spoken to audiences at such a large conference. I also felt a great deal of pressure to perform well since I was out of town for two weeks and I wanted to make sure my time was well spent.
I am happy to report that both of my speeches went well. In fact, at this point, it looks like both of them will generate new business for us.
Those speeches are the backdrop for this article, but not the reason for it. The impetus for writing this article came after my second speech. Having done a good job on my second speech, I decided it was time to celebrate. My wife, Char, and I decided to walk down Waikiki beach to a restaurant called Shorebird, which is situated right on the water. The scene as we ate dinner was amazing. If we looked down the beach in one direction, we could see Diamond Head silhouetted against a cobalt blue sky. If we looked in the other direction, we could watch the sun set over the sparkling waters of the Pacific and the surfers and sailboats on the ocean. This had to be one of the most peaceful scenes I had ever witnessed. Lessons from Hawaii continued

It’s coming up fast. The 20th Annual Columbus Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is on Saturday, May 19, 2012. This is our last call for support!
As promised, our ILS President, Steve Anderson, is ready to wear HOT PINK hair if we reach our goal. Won’t he look pretty? Ha! We’ve staked out the wig and we’re ready…but we need your support! As of this publishing we have raised $3515 of our $5000 goal. Please use the Donate button below to donate to our team…whatever you can. Thank you SO much!
Together let’s strive for a cancer free world and the opportunity to see Steve with HOT PINK hair!
INTRODUCING DAN STOVER, NEW ILS CONSULTANT
“Comfort in Discomfort: Dan’s journey to ILS”
By Daniel Stover

“I
’ve come a long way,” I thought. “I had my struggles in the past; but I’m a new man with a good job, a steady salary, benefits and retirement.” I wore a suit to work every day at a job surrounded by powerful people, so by all means – I was living a comfortable life, right? Sure, I didn’t get a job in my field after graduating college but most people don’t either, truth be told.
In 2011, I began asking myself these two questions with more frequency: Was I comfortable? Was I in the right field? I couldn’t find resolve in either of my answers. Certainly, for most, I was living a perfectly normal life; one that could be seen as “comfortable,” well-managed and consistent. However, I was uncomfortable. I thought at first that it was simply a lack of challenge, being that aproject I was working on was nearing completion and entering the “maintenance phase,” if you will, without something new and fresh to tackle… but I was wrong.
I have a great friend, Pam, who gave me a book on leadership by M.J. Clark, “Shut Up and Lead.” She knew I was soul searching about my professional life. She didn’t tell me at the time, but she knew this book would move me. Seeing in print the changes I had been making, trying to make, and some I hadn’t thought of yet, made me realize what I was missing: reward and fulfillment. Comfort in Discomfort continued
